and the republicans to do a deal with obama. the simple reason, tom, obama will not agree to any significant spending cut. so why give him any kind of a grand bargain that the press will give him credit for and he can end the year as some kind of victorious guy? if you look at the u.s. deficit is about $4 trillion a year. these tax increases cover about 400 billion. that's 9 or 10%. that's. it the rest of this battle is over entitlements. i mean the democrats could solve this whole thing simply by agreeing to a minor increase, just a two year increase. >> the president did put that on the table and the republicans reject that. the real issue here is there going to be a self-inflicted wound to the economy? the uncertainty here. either way taxes on the wealthy are going up. they'll go up under a deal approved in the last hours which may or may not happen or if it doesn't, there's no deal, then we go over the so-called cliff and the tax goes up there. so either way taxes are going up. >> if the president wanted a deal on entitlements, all he has to do is raise the age from social security to 65 to 67, m

is rollback obama initiatives to cut spending. a lot of them thought the debt ceiling should not be increased under any circumstances and to that degree feel like i was. they basically believe their job is to obstruct barack obama and once there is a republican president in place from the two pass this initiative secreted better business climate, more and more deregulation committee funding of programs that have never quite been near and dear to them. of course to flash forward a day, i suspect we'll talk about the debt ceiling fiasco of 2011. after that summer undertaken to the brink of a fiscal cliff, the thinking on the house republican leader ship is maybe a tea party freshmen will go homehome, get yelled at by constituents and realize maybe compromise is not such a bad thing. they went home and the people who put at town halls tend to be that this is their party and those people tend to be tea party and they said why did video? you said you would not under any circumstances raise the debt ceiling. at best there's mixed messages and a great likelihood it will be a while before we see mode

sides do that. president obama has a political capital. it is like money -- how do you spend it? he can spend it on helping our schools. he can spend it with regard to our affairs in the middle east. those are tough questions to answer. my priority is always education and our long term problems. i'm not a deficit hawk. people on both sides do bothwell. i don't understand the fuss about raising the age qualification for social security are medicare. and plead with the caps -- simply lift the caps. franklin roosevelt to not want to be called a socialist. if we just lived in those caps, we would delay -- i can remember the exact numbers. for several decades, anyway. i think that would be less painful than raising the qualified age. medicare is the toughest because of health care costs have been skyrocketing. our country's health care cost is rising faster than any other industrial nation. we don't have much coronation. obamacare had to be cobbled together to appease everybody. we have it and we should be focusing on ways to make our health care more efficient and i think we will. these are
